Local Knowledge

Frequently Asked Questions — Chicago

Common questions about court reporting in Illinois and the Chicago area.

What are the licensing requirements for court reporters in Illinois?

Illinois requires court reporters to hold a Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). Applicants must pass the NCRA RPR exam or an approved state skills test demonstrating stenographic proficiency. Licenses are renewed every two years, and 24 hours of continuing professional education are required per renewal cycle.

What are the deposition rules in Illinois civil cases?

Illinois depositions are governed by the Illinois Supreme Court Rules, particularly Rule 202 (discovery depositions) and Rule 206 (procedures). Notice of deposition must generally be given at least 7 days before the proceeding. Remote depositions are permitted by stipulation or court order under Rule 206(h), which was expanded during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The certified reporter must be authorized to administer oaths in Illinois.

Where are the main courthouses in Chicago?

The Richard J. Daley Center in the Loop is home to the Circuit Court of Cook County — one of the largest unified court systems in the world, with over 400 judges. The Dirksen Federal Building houses both the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Private court reporters are commonly retained for depositions, administrative hearings, and arbitrations throughout the Chicago metro area.
